Easy Faith

Ok, ok. I know it has been a ridiculous amount of time since I've updated this blog, and I'm sure most of you know what has been happening in my life over the last few months, but, I'd like to update you all for the sake of keeping with the story and working on my writing, especially this story.

God has certainly been good to us. It has been a chaotic, roller coaster the last 3 months, but I am a different, stronger person because of it.

We welcomed our little Lucy on Monday, March 10th. We had met with some friends the night before to learn about the whole childbirth thing and what to expect. (We didn't do the whole childbirth classes thing, mostly because our schedules were so wacky.) That same night, I got up around 1:30 to use the bathroom, and my water broke at 36 weeks and 6 days. So we made our way to Spectrum in GR, as recommended, and arrived in plenty of time.

After waiting all morning and into the early afternoon, they decided a c-section would be in my best interest. So, we got to meet Lucy at 3:45pm, all 5lbs, 13oz and 18 inches of her. I can't even tell you the joy that came into my heart the minute I saw her squinting eyes, looking at me as I lay on the OR table. I swear she grinned at me. When she was born, she didn't really cry, mostly squeaked.

I spent a night in the ICU, where I got to see Lucy a couple times that night, then I would be alone with the lights out the window, looking out into the city. It was all for precaution, but I wished to be with my baby girl. After that first night, we got to move to a normal room where Mark could stay and Lucy could too. We did take advantage of the nursery around 4am, though...

One of our battles was getting Lucy to breastfeed. She was early enough that my milk hadn't quite come in and she couldn't latch with her tiny, little mouth, so I would pump and give her the tiny bit that I got, then supplement with formula. By the end of our week at the hospital, I was able to give her enough of my milk though! I was so happy about that.
We got to bring Lucy home the Friday after she was born, on March 14, and we were more than ready. Of course coming home and spending our first night with her was very nerve-racking for me anyway. We would sit up with her in shifts. There was no sleeping for this girl, but I am so blessed I got to experience long nights with a newborn...my newborn!

It was definitely a week of adjusting. We took Lucy to her first doctor appointment, where she passed with flying colors! We couldn't have had a more healthy baby girl, especially one that was born 3 weeks early. Lucy enjoyed her first St. Patrick's Day, which consisted of a trip to church and wearing a green sleeper.

She also got to go to her first photo-shoot with a friend from church, which was fun!

And of course we took non-stop pictures of her all week long!

I spent the week recovering from my c-section, and little did I know that wouldn't be the last of my recovering and battles.

On Sunday, March 23rd, just over a week of having Lucy home from the hospital, we went to Meijer to get groceries and just get out of the house. I had been on blood pressure meds, so I had been feeling funky. The night before I took a shower to try and get rid of a migraine and felt like I would pass out. I slept it off and felt better though. I wasn't really sure how to feel at this point since I had been through a c-section and spent nights up with Lucy, so I knew I wouldn't feel 100%. But in Meijer, it solidified that something more was wrong.

I walked into the store from the car, while Mark pushed a cart with Lucy in it. I couldn't catch my breath. It was the oddest, and most eerie feeling ever. I can't even explain it. I tried to pass it off as either not exercising in months or a panic attack. I decided to wait in the pharmacy area while Mark grabbed our shopping list. He came back and I attempted to walk back out to the car, feeling better than I had walking in. But again, the same "can't catch my breath" feeling returned. So, next stop was the ER.

Judging by the crazy rate they got me in, I knew I probably looked like crap. I didn't know it at the time, by my O2 saturation was in the 60's (that's 60%, when you're supposed to be upper 90's or 100.) I was covered in wires and tubes in a matter of minutes. I felt better, but something wasn't right. After getting a CT Scan, we learned I had a significant blood clot in my lungs. The ER doc didn't feel comfortable moving forward there due to the size and my previous condition. So, I got a helicopter ride to GR.

I finally began to panic for the first time that whole night. Even when I couldn't breathe in Meijer, I felt like it was nothing. I had the eerie feelings, but not the panic feeling. Now, I was in the panic/what will happen feeling. I must say I enjoyed my ride. The sun was just setting over Lake Michigan, and the snow actually sparkled on the ground below. I felt warm and hopeful, and was reminded of God's love and comfort as I watched the impressive scenery whirling by outside.

We arrived in GR in 30 minutes! I was quite impressed with the timing. From there, I remembered being wheeled through many hallways, with the helicopter guy keeping the mood light the whole time. I was quite grateful for him in those moments. The people God sent to me throughout this whole ordeal was perfect timing for when I needed them. We got to the room, and again, more wires, tubes and poking.

I don't remember too much more from before my surgery except for finding out I'd need surgery, and the terror that I felt. It wasn't just any surgery. There would be opening my sternum (again) and bypass and heart & lung machines. Dr. Haw explained it, and only a few things stuck with me, like those descriptions. By this time, I had Mark, his dad, Seth and Eric there. Again, very grateful to have that support in this critical time. Visitors are great when things settle down, but having core people around you as you endure the unknown is a necessity.

I felt scared, but hopeful, and surprisingly at a certain peace that I knew came straight from heaven. Dr. Haw was so confident, but very careful with his wording. He made us aware that he had never faced a situation quite like mine, but he knew exactly the condition I had and how to work around it. He was quite hopeful and positive, but still made the risk very evident.

Everyone there prayed with me. It was probably one of the hardest prayers I ever contributed to. I kissed my husband and was taken back to surgery.

From there, things are blank. But I woke up. God had decided my work wasn't done. I still had a little girl to raise and work to do. Recovery the few days after were rough. I remember that. I felt like I had been hit by a bus, as every bone, muscle and joint hurt. I spent about 4 days in the ICU, then was transferred to the heart center where I spent the next 2 weeks.

I got to visit Lucy every few days, thanks to the people who brought her to see me, as well as many friends. All were so encouraging to my healing process. Along the way, I learned just how incredibly lucky and blessed I was. They had pulled a 7 inch clot out of my lungs... 7 inches!!!! Plus, my condition had actually been a blessing, as I has larger blood vessels that allowed blood flow to continue around the clot. I shouldn't have made it through this, yet God wanted me to. He had the best doctors there, and His hand was what brought me though.

Seeing Lucy the first time after surgery in the ICU.

This was how I watched the sunrise each morning, as it reflected off the children's hospital each morning.

Visiting Lucy was so great, but every time she had to leave, it broke me.

This story goes on further, and it continues even today, but hopefully it will be in book format someday, and told in a more creative way. The bottom line is that God worked in my life in incredible ways, and I want to tell the world about the miracles He still does and be a light for Him through all of this.

The reason I call this "Easy Faith" is because it can be so easy to seek God's face when things are at their lowest. When all the cards are stacked against us and when we have no where to look, but up. However, when we remember these incredible things God does for us, then apply that faith in the times that are awesome and great in life, we have faith indeed. Let this inspire you to always look to Him alone.

Incredibly Blessed

We are sure getting down to the wire until baby Lucy arrives, as I hit 36 weeks today, and induction will be at 39! Let's just say that I am one anxious, excited and nervous mama! We had another ultrasound this past week, to see how Lucy is progressing, and she is growing strong, weighing in at 5lbs 12oz and has the chubbiest cheeks! Here is her latest mug-shot.

I can't help but look back on the road God has led us down and just stand in awe of His marvelous grace and blessing through all of this! I never dreamed we would be able to have our own baby, but this is God's plan for us, and we are just deeply blessed to be where we are. The past couple weeks have come with their own pregnancy woes, as getting around has been a little more uncomfortable and at times just painful, and I have quite a demanding schedule when it comes to visiting the bathroom all night, but I know this is God's way of preparing us for Lucy.

We know this is God's plan and even through the woes and worries, He has proven Himself to us more than enough throughout this process, and I know He will continue to let His light shine through it all! (After all, Lucy means "light"!) He has brought us through the worries of my high-risk status, and continues to; He has gotten us through the early on miscarriage scare, and He continues to reassure us through the people and doctors along the way.

We have no one to thank but the ONE! I thank you for your faithfulness in prayer on our behalf, and as we near the finish line of pregnancy, we continue to covet your prayers.

31 Weeks! The Countdown Begins!

Looks like we got only 8 weeks to go!!! Check out Lucy at 31 weeks!

Those cheeks!

<3

It never fails - every time they try to get a full face shot of her, she has her arm up in the way. =) Just like mama.

Keep us in your prayers as we look ahead to these last 8 weeks (or less!!) leading up to meeting our baby girl! We are so excited and so nervous. We have been truly blessed by this entire journey and never expected to be where we are. Pray for low stress levels (HA!) and healthiness all around. Thanks you so much for all your support through this! We can't wait for you to meet Lucy either! God is good!

Lucy's Healthy Heart!

So we indeed have lots of updates since I last posted!
We have announced our baby girl's name:

That's right! Lucy Mae Ruhlig!

Also, today we had Lucy's echo cardiogram, which was done to ensure that she doesn't have any congenital problems like her mom. She passed with flying colors, and we also learned she is 2 and a half pounds right now! WOW! Guess we don't need to worry about that low birth weight thing...

Here are some pics we got of her today (27 weeks):

She's a mover, so this profile of her was a little fuzzy...

Crossed, little legs

Every pic we've gotten of her face, she has her hand next to it. Already a shy girl.

And she was hiding her face behind the placenta...

Still as cute as can be!

Thanks for the prayers for our little blessing! Lucy is doing beautifully, and mom is doing very well too! No problems yet! Keep those prayers coming as we enter the last trimester!

25 Weeks!

After a white-knuckle driving experience to GR in a hefty blizzard, we rolled into our appointment about 20 minutes late, but they were gracious enough to let us work our way into the schedule again. Everything is looking great with baby! She is right on target for growth and things seem to be going in the right direction! Here are some pics of her 25 week check up!

21 Week Pics and News!

We had a wonderful appointment today! Got more pics of our little girl and got some more questions answered and more reassurance about the path we're on. We have loved the doctors and people we've worked with so far and are at ease about what the future holds. =)
Of course, I'm sharing today's pics!

Prayers for Faith

Today was a rough reminder for me. As we approach 20 weeks of pregnancy tomorrow, I can't even express how blessed and grateful I am to have come this far. God certainly has exceeded my prayers in this, and I have faith that He will carry us till the end.
Our check up today was good. Baby continues to grow normally and her heartbeat is great. Emotionally, I was shaken though, as I received a reminder of how hard this will be as the risks continue to be laid out for me to ponder and decide on. Hearing the numbers and statistics of the already small population of people with my condition, and the even smaller number of them who got pregnant is a bit scary. So today kind of stunk in that aspect, and needless to say I was an emotional wreck most of the day.
But as I sit here tonight and ponder the things that have been brought up today, and then ponder the things that have gotten me this far (faith and a ridiculous amount of prayer), I realize nothing has changed but the numbers being set before me. The statistics were always there, whether I fully knew them or not, but I'm still doing great. And though I'm emotionally shaken, I need to keep the faith.
I need to remember that there is a reason God put us down this path. He has blessed us fully with this opportunity. Why should I doubt because the numbers are suddenly presented? I have always known my risks, and those risks haven't changed. My health is the same. Our little girl is doing wonderfully and I still have the support system I've had all along. God is good, and He intends good from this no matter the outcome for me.
I continue to covet your prayers and ask that you help Mark and I to remember God's goodness and will throughout this journey. God is bigger than numbers and health concerns. He will bless and be blessed through this. Thank you for your prayers for our family. We can't owe you enough for them.

It's a Girl!

Had our appointment (a couple of weeks ago now), and got to see some incredible development in our little one! They have all their fingers and toes. Everything seems to be good! We also got the early signs that our little one is a girl!

Here are some 17-week pics:

This is the only shot like this she'll ever have!

Cool 3D shot of her!

A Frank Rant on Faith

If it's one thing I've learned about most in this pregnancy journey it is about faith. Every twist and turn of this path has been just putting the foot out there and letting God put it where it needs to go. The best part of it all is that He's done all the work for me; I'm simply a follower.
It is most frustrating to be questioned for this decision. I feel for everyone out there with a disability, no matter how severe or visible it is, because in some way and at probably many points in life, you've been questioned. You've been told what you can and can not do. Maybe you've been even given a "time-limit". If it's one thing that has become evident to me through all of this, it is no one has that right.
I can't tell you how many times I've been denied an experience, or been called a liability in a round about way because of my heart condition. Pregnancy was definitely one of those red flags that's been waving since I knew what a menstrual cycle was. (Sorry to be so blunt, but this is called a "frank" rant.) I'll never forget sitting in the cardiologist office being lectured about how finding a man would be a struggle for me because I had to be up front with him about my womanly duties, if you will. "It's a man's dream to have his own kids too, and you need to make sure you tell him your limitations before you decide to marry him." Yep, that's pretty much exact wording. Way to make a girl feel valuable in this world at the age of 18. Sure, he deserves to know me, but let's let him decide whether or not I'm marriage material, and luckily if he thinks I'm not, I don't think he is either. (But that's another rant for another time.)
So what got me here? Fourteen weeks pregnant and feeling incredibly confident considering the circumstances? Well, I'll spare you all the details, but pretty much doctors that didn't make it sound impossible and the biggest being faith. I've had friends who've had the hardest time conceiving and others who have lost babies. I can't tell you how crushing that is to hear, and how incredibly hard to understand those circumstances are. But the fact we got pregnant in less than 2 months of barely trying, and getting through a miscarriage scare tells me that this is definitely God's will for me. He closed the wombs of women in the Bible for less reasons that my situation. He has shown me that my life is more than a limitation and it is in His hands.
We prayed about this decision last spring, pretty much telling God that we were giving it to Him. And boy, did He answer quick. Then He reassured us after all the struggles we endured 6-7 weeks in.
So I guess the point of this little rant on faith is the following:
Please stop questioning our decision to take this route. Yes, I know my risks. Yes, I've heard it my whole life. And yes, we're fine with how it's turning out.
It's not like we're going back, and frankly it's a little late to be voicing all your concerns. So please, just celebrate what God has done in our lives with us. You live once (in this world anyway), and having my own child, as well as adopting, as always been something I've wanted to do. God has put this blessing in our lives. So let's view this little one primarily as a blessing and not a risk.Try faith instead of worry. Something I'm still learning to do everyday.

11 Weeks!

We've officially made it to the 11 week mark. The nausea is finally getting better day by day and things are looking good for our little one! We had our appointments in Grand Rapids today at Maternal Fetal Medicine and at my Cardiologist. Both went very well and I was impressed. Our next appointment in GR is Oct. 22, and we get to hopefully find out if we're having a boy or girl then too! We even got a disc of pictures from our ultrasound! Check 'em out!

Here you can see that our little guy or girl already has Mark's nose...

Signs of the heartbeat. =)

And they have frog legs too.

So exciting! Definitely going in the baby book! This baby appreciates your prayers! We appreciate them too! Thanks for all of them!
